Food is medicine. We have to eat to live. Some of us live to eat. What can I say? This isn't the kind of medicine that you have to take with a spoonful of sugar, as in "Just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down, the medicine go down, the medicine go down!"
Food is delicious medicine and it comes in all sorts of shapes and sizes. Fortunately, it does not come in a pill form (yuck). Here are a few fun facts about food:
- avocados have more potassium than bananas. Feel free to eat your guacamole, while singing, "Yes, we have no bananas. We have no bananas today."
- Carrots were originally grown as medicine, not as food. They are now considered tasty food. Plus, they are crunchy, which is always a good trait for food. If you get bored with having an orange carrot, you can choose another color. Carrots can be orange, white, yellow, red, or purple. You can decorate your plate with colorful carrots. Plus carrots are loaded with vitamin A.
- We are humans, which means that we can't eat all of that stuff that other species eat. Koalas enjoy eating eucalyptus leaves, but don't go for the taste test. Humans can't digest eucalyptus leaves. It is toxic for us. It is a good herbal remedy, used topically. People also shouldn't much on grass, either, although cows seem to enjoy it.
- Vitamin C is necessary for a healthy diet, and you have many choices as to how you can consume your vitamin C. You could choose between mango, papaya, pineapple, kiwi fruit, cantaloupe, citrus fruits, broccoli, bell peppers, spinach, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, and winter squash. Yummy.
- Here are a few fun food facts for you before I go to sleep. Yep, this took all day, probably because of the failed attempt to go nuclear!
- Radishes used to be black and they were grown in Egypt since about 2780 B.C.
- zucchinis can grow to be as large as baseball bats. Unfortunately, giant zucchinis are tasteless.
- Parsley has three times as much vitamin C as an orange.
- mustard greens are an excellent anti-cancer vegetable.
- A tomato grown in a hothouse has half the vitamin c content of a vine ripened tomato.
