Today I'll take you through the steps of a painting that, at this point, is still a work in progress. This is how the painting came to be. I have a friend, Amy, who wants me to make a painting to go with the words, "Friends become our chosen family." I puzzled for a while about what sort of image would go with those words.
Recently, Amy was looking at one of my watercolor sketchbooks when she saw the above painting of two bears at the Japanese gardens in Buffalo's Delaware Park. The garden was created in 1974 as a gift from Buffalo's sister city, Kanazawa, Japan.
Amy said that she liked the picture but that she wanted three bears in it, as opposed to the bear pair in the original watercolor. Also, we agreed that I would make the new painting larger and that it would be acrylic paints on canvas board. |

I definitely like the addition of the tree - I don't know the art term, but it seems to balance out the picture somehow. I've done some animal portraits which came out pretty well but I leave the background blank as I've never gotten the hang of painting either water or grassy type landscape. :)
I don't draw, and I never realized the drawing process is a lot like writing in some ways - revisions and editing. Moving things around, rearranging. In some ways, similar creative processes.
I like how you show step by step how you produce your creativity. I love it!
Good idea using the photocopier to adjust the size of the bears. :)
I love bears! Can't wait to see the painting. My son is interested in animation, so he has a similar process. He finds a picture, looks for a tutorial on how to draw it and then, does so. He leaves them as sketches most of the time, though. So neat to see your bears!
How interesting to see the process of how you do your work.
I have always admired (and, perhaps, coveted) the ability to draw. Two of my siblings are so gifted, but the only things I can draw are conclusions, curtains and, more latterly, my pension!
I am enjoying your posts, thank you.
