Grand Island's glorious greenhouse

Today I went to the Farmer Fest, sponsored by Grand Island Farmers, Inc. It was held at E.H. Enterprises, to celebrate the re-opening of this greenhouse business. 

Despite the rainy weather, the farmer fest was well attended. It featured the beautiful greenhouse, full of hanging baskets and flowers, as well as a variety of vendors. Items for sale included honey, maple syrup, tomato plants, meats, herbal tea, and jams and jellies.

People could buy ready-to-eat foods, such as chili, smoked chicken legs, Italian sausage with peppers and onions, and baked goods.

There were nonfood items for sale, too, including Grand Island goods from "Everything Grand Island" and locally made picnic tables.

It's really encouraging to see the Grand Island farm community expanding and giving people the option of fresh, locally grown foods and plants.

The monthly farmers market will be held next on the first Saturday of June at the Knights of Columbus hall at 1841 Whitehaven Road. In addition, from June 15th to October 15th, there will be a weekly Monday night farmers market held at Tom Thompson's farm at 2487 Long Road.

If you'd like to visit the greenhouse, its hours are from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Mondays through Saturdays, and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sundays.
